McDowell Road, Jackrabbit Trail, and I-10 are set to expand.
Hey Verrado, are we ready for more road construction? The I-10 widening project of just a few years ago stays fresh in most of our collective memories – but we’ve said it then and we’ll say it again” No Pain – No Gain.
McDowell Road Improvement Project Begins June 2nd
We are all getting excited about the new Verrado Marketplace starting to take shape with concrete pads being poured and walls being erected. McDowell Rd runs smack thru the center of it…well not quite yet-but it will soon. Big improvements are coming to McDowell Road! Starting June 2nd, construction will begin on McDowell Road from Jackrabbit Trail to 202nd Avenue. This project includes:
- Road widening
- Improved storm drainage
- A new multipurpose use path
- A pedestrian bridge at Tuthill Wash
Please note: There will be no through traffic in this area during construction. Crews will be working to safely and efficiently complete the upgrades that will enhance both travel and pedestrian access along this corridor. The intersection of Jackrabbit, Encanto will be a 3-way stop for the duration of construction. All neighborhood traffic must use Encanto Boulevard. Homes with driveways on McDowell Rd will have access maintained full-time throughout the project.

I-10/Jackrabbit Trail Interchange Planning Underway (finally!)
I-10/Jackrabbit Trail Traffic Interchange Study
The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), in coordination with the Maricopa Association of Governments and the city of Buckeye, has initiated a project to improve the interchange at Interstate 10 and Jackrabbit Trail.
A two-phased approach was created to expedite addressing traffic congestion at the I-10/Jackrabbit Trail interchange while continuing work on the overall project.
Phase 1 Planned improvements include:
- Reconstructing the existing traffic interchange and adding traffic signals.
- Widening the interchange ramps to provide additional turn lanes.
- Removing and reconstructing the existing I-10 bridges over Jackrabbit Trail.
- Widening Jackrabbit Trail to three lanes in each direction south of McDowell Road to south of Interstate 10
Phase 2 Planned improvements include:
- Widening Jackrabbit Trail to three lanes in each direction south of the I-10/Jackrabbit Trail traffic interchange to just north of Van Buren Street.
In September 2024, ADOT completed the final Design Concept Report (DCR) for improvements at the I-10/Jackrabbit Trail traffic interchange. This project is included in the Regional Strategic Transportation Infrastructure Investment Plan and will be funded in part through Proposition 479, a dedicated half-cent sales tax for transportation approved by Maricopa County voters in 2024.
Project Area
The Phase 1 project limits include the I-10/Jackrabbit Trail traffic interchange and extend from south of McDowell Road to north of Roosevelt Street.
The Phase 2 project limits extend from south of the I-10/Jackrabbit Trail traffic interchange to north of Van Buren Street.
