Golf Course Update

Last November it seemed like we skipped right past our usual fall weather, and went directly to one of the coolest and wettest winters in several years. It now appears we will be doing the same thing in reverse, and head straight to summer. From an agronomic perspective, you could not have drawn up a worse four-month span than we experienced at the end of 2022 and the beginning of this year, however we always learn from different scenarios we are forced to manage through, and use that experience to prepare for the upcoming season and years to follow.

This summer season expect another successful transition back to bermudagrass as we have already begun that process. Universally lowering mowing heights to increase sunlight to the dormant bermudagrass has been taking place for the past several weeks, and will continue throughout the remainder of May. In early June we will continue our practice of using a selective herbicide to gradually remove the ryegrass overseeding and give our base bermudagrass the entirety of the summer to reestablish. This summer we will utilize some additional course closure dates for key agronomic practice to prepare for the upcoming fall/winter season.

Golf Course Projects

The course has begun a much-needed plant removal project around tee boxes on both golf courses. Years of growth has really impacted the areas we can use to set tee markers, and has blocked many sightlines to the fairway impacting playability. That is being followed by the installation of decorative gravel to serve as an accent border. The gravel is being compacted and sprayed with a soil stabilizer to improve footing as you walk to the tee, and to help reduce weed pressure immediately surrounding the tee box. Some of the par 3 tee boxes will be releveled and sodded during the slower summer months, and the gravel installation will be done in conjunction with that process on those holes.

Bunkers remain a priority on both courses. The courses have recently formed a crew of staff who are working on edging, redistributing, and adding bunker sand where necessary. There is also started a long-term bunker study, and the courses will engage a golf course architect to compose strategies for any future work relating to bunkers. More specifically on the Founders course, however we will include the Victory course as well to look at some select areas.

Verrado Golf will have a very busy and productive summer ahead.
